Untapping root system architecture for crop improvement

چکیده

Roots are the first organ to sense water deficit, and at the same time they extract virtually all those mineral nutrients from soil that are consumed by humans. Soil resource acquisition under challenging conditions such as drought is a primary limitation on plant productivity, resulting in low yields and thus food insecurity in the poorest countries. Indeed, in overall global agriculture, drought accounts for more loss in plant productivity than any other abiotic factor. Thus the development of crop cultivars with enhanced traits for soil resource acquisition is a key goal for feeding the growing world population (Lynch, 2007). However, so far the potential of root traits for crop improvement remains largely unexploited, largely because of the limited accessibility of roots in their belowground soil habitat.

Phenotyping field-state wheat root system architecture for root foraging traits in response to environment×management interactions

An important aspect of below-ground crop physiology is its root foraging performance, which is inherently related to root system architecture (RSA). A 2-yr field experiment was conducted and the field-state wheat RSA was phenotyped for root foraging trait (RFT). Four RSA-derived traits, i.e. Root horizontal angle (RHA), axial root expansion volume (AREV), RSA convex hull volume (CHV) and effect...

Root System Architecture and Abiotic Stress Tolerance: Current Knowledge in Root and Tuber Crops

The challenge to produce more food for a rising global population on diminishing agricultural land is complicated by the effects of climate change on agricultural productivity. Although great progress has been made in crop improvement, so far most efforts have targeted above-ground traits. Roots are essential for plant adaptation and productivity, but are less studied due to the difficulty of o...

Can diversity in root architecture explain plant water use efficiency? A modeling study

Drought stress is a dominant constraint to crop production. Breeding crops with adapted root systems for effective uptake of water represents a novel strategy to increase crop drought resistance. Due to complex interaction between root traits and high diversity of hydrological conditions, modeling provides important information for trait based selection. In this work we use a root architecture ...

Roots Withstanding their Environment: Exploiting Root System Architecture Responses to Abiotic Stress to Improve Crop Tolerance

To face future challenges in crop production dictated by global climate changes, breeders and plant researchers collaborate to develop productive crops that are able to withstand a wide range of biotic and abiotic stresses. However, crop selection is often focused on shoot performance alone, as observation of root properties is more complex and asks for artificial and extensive phenotyping plat...

Enhancing auxin accumulation in maize root tips improves root growth and dwarfs plant height

Maize is a globally important food, feed crop and raw material for the food and energy industry. Plant architecture optimization plays important roles in maize yield improvement. PIN-FORMED (PIN) proteins are important for regulating auxin spatiotemporal asymmetric distribution in multiple plant developmental processes. In this study, ZmPIN1a overexpression in maize increased the number of late...
